Is Your Website Safe? How to Run a Free Website Security Check (Guide for Indian Businesses)
Most small business owners only find out their website has a problem when a customer tells them: the site shows a warning, opens a betting or pharmacy page, or Google marks it as unsafe. By then you have already lost trust and enquiries. The good news is that you can check the basics yourself, for free, in under a minute.
This guide explains what a website security check looks at, the warning signs that a site has been hacked, and the simple fixes that prevent most problems. It is written for shop owners, clinics, schools, coaching centres and other small businesses in India, especially those running WordPress.

What a free website security check looks at
A free scan can only see what your website shows to the public, the same way a visitor or Google sees it. That is still a lot. A good public scan checks:
- Is the site online? Does the homepage load properly, or does it return an error?
- SSL certificate (the padlock): is it valid, when does it expire, and is the connection secure (HTTPS)?
- Security headers: small settings that tell browsers to block common attacks like clickjacking and content injection. Most small business sites are missing several of them.
- Platform detection: whether the site runs on WordPress, Next.js or something else, so the advice fits your setup.
- Page health: broken or unreachable pages that hurt visitors and your Google ranking.
What a public scan cannot see: files hidden on your server, outdated plugins that don't announce their version, or malware that only shows to some visitors. For that, the scanner needs access to the site itself. In Website Doctor, you connect a WordPress site with a small plugin, and it then checks your files against official WordPress copies, looks for malware, and can take backups before any repair. Fixes are only applied after you approve them.
Signs your website may be hacked
Hacked sites often look normal to the owner, because attackers hide their changes from logged-in admins. Watch for these signs:
- Google search results for your site show strange titles in Japanese, Chinese, or about medicines, loans or betting.
- Visitors, especially on mobile, get redirected to another website.
- Chrome shows a red "Deceptive site ahead" or "This site may be hacked" warning.
- New admin users you didn't create appear in WordPress.
- Your hosting company suspends the account or warns about high resource use or spam emails.
- The site suddenly becomes very slow, or pages you never made appear in Google.
If you see any of these, don't delete files in a panic. Take a backup first, then get help to clean the site properly, otherwise the hacker's backdoor usually stays and the problem comes back.
Why small business websites in India get hacked
Attackers rarely target a business personally. Automated bots scan thousands of websites a day, looking for known weaknesses. The most common ones we see:
- 1.Outdated plugins and themes: the website was built once and never updated, so known security holes stay open.
- 2.Nulled (pirated) premium themes and plugins: free downloads of paid themes often come with hidden malware. This is very common in low-cost website projects.
- 3.Weak or shared passwords: "admin" with a simple password, or the same password used by the developer for many clients.
- 4.No backups: when something goes wrong, there is no clean copy to restore.
- 5.Expired SSL or old PHP versions on cheap hosting that nobody maintains.
Simple fixes that prevent most problems
- Keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated, and delete the ones you don't use.
- Never install nulled or "free premium" themes and plugins. Buy the licence or use a free alternative from WordPress.org.
- Use a strong, unique admin password and turn on two-factor login.
- Make sure SSL is active and renews automatically, and that every page opens on https://.
- Keep automatic backups stored outside your hosting account.
- Run a security scan regularly, not only when something feels wrong.
If your website was built by a freelancer who is no longer around, ask for the admin login, hosting login and domain login to be in your name. Many owners in India discover these are with the developer only after a problem starts.
When to get professional help
