How to Put Your Shop on Google Maps for Free: A Step-by-Step Guide for Bihar Businesses
When someone in Motihari, Bettiah or Muzaffarpur searches "mobile shop near me" or "best dentist in Motihari", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those three get most of the calls. Getting your business on that map is free, takes about 20 minutes, and is the single most useful thing a local shop can do online.
Google calls this listing a Google Business Profile (it used to be called Google My Business). This guide walks through creating it, getting it verified, and the few things that decide whether you appear in the top three.
Before you start
Keep ready: a Gmail account you will keep for years (use the business owner's, not the shop helper's or a freelancer's), your exact business name, address with landmark and PIN code, phone number, opening hours, and 5 to 10 clear photos of your shop.
Step 1: Check if your business is already on Google Maps
Open Google Maps on your phone and search your business name with your town. Customers or Google itself may have already added it. If you find it, tap the listing and choose "Own this business?" or "Claim this business", then follow the steps. Don't create a second listing: duplicates confuse Google and split your reviews.
Step 2: Create your Google Business Profile
- 1.Go to business.google.com on your phone or computer and sign in with the business Gmail account.
- 2.Type your business name exactly as it is written on your board. Don't add extra words like "best" or "cheap" or your town name unless they are really part of the name. Google can suspend listings for this.
- 3.Choose your main category carefully, for example "Mobile phone shop", "Dentist", "Coaching center" or "Hardware store". This is the most important choice for which searches you show up in.
- 4.Add your address if customers visit you. If you go to customers instead (an electrician, a caterer, a tutor who visits homes), choose a service area and hide the address.
- 5.Drop the pin exactly on your shop on the map. In smaller towns Google's guess is often off by a few streets.
- 6.Add your phone number and website if you have one. You can also add a WhatsApp chat option later from the profile.
Step 3: Verify that you own the business
Google will not show a new listing properly until it is verified. It picks the method for you. Most often today it asks for a short video: you record your board or signboard, the inside of the shop, and something that proves you run it, such as opening the shutter or showing the billing counter. Some businesses get a phone call, SMS or email code instead.
- Record the video in daylight, in one continuous take, with the shop name on the board clearly visible.
- Show the street or a nearby landmark so Google can match the location to your pin.
- Show that you have access to the business: unlock the shop, open the cash counter, or show equipment you use.
- Review usually takes a few days. If it is rejected, read the reason, fix that one thing, and try again.
Step 4: Fill in everything
Complete profiles get shown more often and get more calls. After verification, open your profile and fill every section:
- Opening hours, including Sunday, and special hours for Chhath, Diwali and Holi so people don't arrive to a closed shutter.
- Photos: the outside of the shop as people see it from the road, the inside, your products, and you or your team. Add a few new photos every month.
- Products or services, with prices where you can. A coaching centre can list batches; a clinic can list treatments.
- A short description in plain words of what you sell and which areas you serve. You can write it in Hindi, English or both.
- Your website link. If you don't have a website yet, the free profile still works, but a website is where people go to decide.
Step 5: Get genuine reviews
Reviews are what move you into the top three on the map, and they are what customers read before they call. A business with 40 recent reviews beats one with 4, even if it is a little farther away.
- From your profile, copy the "Ask for reviews" link and send it on WhatsApp to happy customers the same day they buy.
- Keep a small QR code card with the review link at the counter.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly. Future customers read your replies.
- Never buy reviews or write them yourself, and don't offer discounts in exchange for reviews. Google removes them and can suspend the listing.
Mistakes we see often in Bihar
- The listing was made by a freelancer or relative on their own Gmail, and the owner can't log in to change anything. Always keep ownership in your own account, and add others as managers.
- The phone number on Google is an old one nobody answers.
- The shop name on Google, on the board and on the website are all slightly different. Keep them the same everywhere.
- Two or three duplicate listings for the same shop, each with a few reviews.
- No photos, or only one blurry photo, so customers scroll past to a competitor who looks open and busy.
Google Maps and a website work together
The Maps listing gets you found. A website is where a customer goes next to see your full products, prices, timings and photos, and then calls or messages you on WhatsApp. Google also trusts a listing more when it links to a proper website with the same name, address and phone number. If you are unsure whether you need both, read does my Motihari business need a website.
Don't have time to do this yourself? GrowVibe sets up and tidies Google Business Profiles as part of every local website we build, and keeps the profile in your name. See website design in Motihari or Bettiah, or send us a WhatsApp message with your shop name and town.

Yes. A Google Business Profile is completely free. Be careful of anyone who calls claiming to be from Google and asks for money to list or verify your business; Google does not charge for this.
