WordPress or a Custom-Coded Website? A Guide for Indian Small Businesses
For most Indian small businesses, the choice depends on one thing: who will update the website, and how often. If the site rarely changes, a simple static site or a basic WordPress site is enough. If you want to add offers, photos, products or posts yourself every week without worrying about plugin updates, a custom-coded website with your own admin login is usually the safer long-term choice.
Neither option is "better" for everyone. GrowVibe builds all three types, so this guide is not trying to sell you one. It explains each option in plain words, then helps you match it to your business, whether you run a shop, a clinic, a coaching centre or a hotel.
Three kinds of business website, explained simply
1. Static website
A static website is a set of fixed pages: Home, About, Services, Gallery, Contact. There is no login and no database. It opens very fast and there is almost nothing to hack. The downside is that every change, even a new phone number, needs a developer. This is the "static" side of the static vs dynamic website question.
2. WordPress website
WordPress is free software that runs a large share of the world's websites. You get a dashboard where you can edit pages and write posts. Features are added with plugins (for forms, galleries, WhatsApp buttons, SEO and so on). It is flexible and familiar, but every plugin, the theme and WordPress itself need regular updates.
3. Custom-coded dynamic website with your own admin login
Here the developer writes the website and a simple admin dashboard just for your business. You log in and add or edit pages, posts, photos, offers or products. Staff can get their own logins, and enquiries from the contact form are saved in the dashboard. There are no third-party plugins to update. The dashboard only has the buttons you need, so it is easier for non-technical staff.
These map directly to GrowVibe's India packages: a static or WordPress Business Website starts at ₹15,999, and a Dynamic Website with Admin Login starts at ₹24,999. If customers, students or patients need their own logins, bookings or online payments, that is a Web App or Portal, which starts at ₹69,999. Full details are on our pricing page.
Speed on 4G and budget Android phones
Most of your customers will open your site on a ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 Android phone, often on patchy 4G. If the page takes more than a few seconds, many will press back and call the next business on Google Maps.
- Static sites are the fastest. They send ready-made pages with very little code.
- Custom-coded sites can be just as fast, because the developer only includes what the page needs.
- WordPress can be fast too, but it needs care: a light theme, few plugins, compressed images and caching. Heavy page-builder themes with sliders and ten plugins are a common reason Indian business sites feel slow on phones.
Security: why so many WordPress sites get hacked
WordPress itself is reasonably secure when kept up to date. The problem is what happens after launch. The developer hands over the site, nobody logs in for a year, and old plugins pile up with known security holes. Attackers scan the internet for exactly these sites. Hacked WordPress sites are common in India, and the usual signs are spam links, redirects to betting or pharma sites, or Google showing a "This site may be hacked" warning.
- If you choose WordPress, someone must update WordPress, the theme and plugins at least every month.
- Use only a few well-known plugins, and avoid "nulled" (pirated) premium plugins, which often carry malware.
- Keep automatic backups, and store a copy outside the hosting account.
- Use strong passwords and do not share one admin login among all staff.
Static and custom-coded sites have a smaller attack surface because there are no public plugins for attackers to target. They still need secure hosting, HTTPS and sensible passwords, but there is far less routine updating.
Who will update the site, and how often?
Be honest here. This one answer decides more than any feature list.
- Nobody, or a few times a year: a static site is fine. Ask your developer to make the occasional change.
- The owner, now and then: WordPress or a custom dashboard both work. A custom dashboard is simpler because it only shows what you need.
- Staff, every week (new offers, results, admissions notices, room photos): a custom dashboard with separate staff logins is easier and safer. WordPress also works if someone takes responsibility for updates.
- A full-time content person writing blog posts: WordPress has the most mature writing tools.
Hosting in India and Hindi content
Cheap shared hosting plans in India usually cost roughly ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 a year. They are fine for a static site. WordPress on the cheapest plans often gets slow when many sites share one server, so it may need a better plan. Custom-coded sites can be hosted on modern platforms that serve pages from servers close to Indian visitors. Whatever you choose, make sure the domain and hosting are registered in your name, not the developer's.
Hindi works on all three. WordPress handles Devanagari text well, and plugins can add a Hindi/English switch. A custom site can have Hindi pages built in, and your dashboard can let you write offers in Hindi or Hinglish. One tip: many customers in Bihar and across north India search in English but read Hindi more comfortably, so important pages like services and contact often work well in both.
Cost over 3 years (an illustrative example)
The build price is only part of the cost. Here is a rough picture of what each option tends to cost over three years. Your own numbers will vary.
- Static site: build from ₹15,999, plus domain (usually ₹700 to ₹1,500 a year) and basic hosting. Small text changes later are charged per job by most developers.
- WordPress site: build from ₹15,999, plus domain and hosting, plus maintenance. Freelancers in India usually charge roughly ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a month to keep plugins updated and backed up. Premium themes or plugins may add yearly licence fees, often billed in dollars. Cleaning up a hacked site, if it happens, is an extra cost.
- Custom site with admin login: build from ₹24,999, plus domain and hosting. Little ongoing maintenance, because there are no plugins to update. Your own team makes content changes for free.
So WordPress is often cheaper in year one, while a custom dashboard can come out similar or cheaper by year three for a business that updates often. For a full breakdown of prices in Bihar and the rest of India, read our website cost guide for 2026.
Which one fits your type of business
- Shop or kirana/retail store: a static site or WordPress is usually enough. Focus on Google Maps, photos and a WhatsApp button. If you want to post weekly offers or a product list yourself, choose a custom dashboard.
- Clinic or doctor: static or WordPress for timings, services and location. If you want online appointments with patient logins, that is a portal.
- Coaching centre: a custom dashboard works well for posting batches, results and notices often. Student logins, fee records and online test material need a portal.
- School: a custom dashboard for notices, events and admission updates by office staff. Parent and student logins with fee payment need a portal.
- Builder or real estate: a custom dashboard to add and remove projects, flats and photos as they sell. WordPress also works if someone maintains it.
- Hotel or guest house: static or WordPress for rooms, photos and contact. A custom dashboard if you change room rates and offers often. Direct online booking with UPI payment needs a portal.
- Startup or portal idea: custom-coded from day one. WordPress plugins are not a good base for a product people log into and pay through.

Five questions to answer before you decide
- 1.Who will update the website, and how often: daily, monthly, or a few times a year?
- 2.Does the site only need to show information, or must it do something, like take bookings, payments or student logins?
- 3.If you pick WordPress, who will update the plugins every month, and is that cost in your budget?
- 4.Do you need Hindi, English or both?
- 5.What is your realistic budget for building the site, and for running it over the next three years?
If your answers are "rarely", "just information" and "tight budget", start with a static or simple WordPress site. If your answers are "every week", "staff will update it" and "nobody will manage plugins", a custom dashboard is the better fit. If customers need to log in or pay, you need a portal.
The most common mistake
Choosing WordPress because "everyone uses it", then never updating it. A WordPress site that nobody looks after is often worse than a simple static site. Pick the option that matches the time and people you really have.
What if you outgrow your first choice?
This is normal. Many businesses start with a static site, then want a dashboard once they begin posting offers. Others start on WordPress and move to a custom site after a hack or when it gets too slow. A switch is a real project: content has to be moved, and old page addresses need redirects so you do not lose your Google rankings. But it is not a disaster, and it does not mean your first choice was wrong. Pick what fits your business for the next two or three years, not what you might need in ten.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on who updates the site. If the site rarely changes and someone will keep plugins updated, WordPress is a good, lower-cost start. If you or your staff will update it often and nobody wants to manage plugin updates, a custom-coded website with its own admin login is usually safer and simpler over time.
